A GREAT JOURNEY WITH VAN GOGH
One of the best pieces that I ever read explaining paintings along the different periods which were passed by Van Gogh. Also, it gives a complete ride through his life and personality.

A Quality Work!!
I have this book and I am so glad ,I discovered it. I am, a painter, and have always been influenced by Van Goghs work. However most of the books I own do not have very good quality , printing .This book however is excellent! It is very close to , standing in front of the original painting. I would recomend this book to anyone that loves Van Gogh. I am so proud to make this book a part of my art library. Get it while you can!!

Didn't see the exhibit? Read the book!
The next best thing if you weren't able to make it to this record-breaking exhibition in Washington and Los Angeles. This book, an overview of the exhibition, is an extremely thorough and interesting overview of the 70 works on display. But it's more than that. I was very impressed with Richard Kendall's commentary in the book. Not only is this a comprehensive and thoughtful look at the "Van Gogh's Van Goghs" exhibition, it's also an excellent look at Van Gogh's life and career--period. I might have expected this--this major exhibition was superb and this catalogue is a worthy companion. Exhibition or not, this book is first-rate.

A Daughter of Zion

I nearly failed Uni because of this book!
I had to write this review to encourage people to read these books. I discovered them during exam time in my second year of Uni and can't believe I managed to pass my exams when I read each book non stop over four days. Truly exception books and an inspirational writer. I have never been so deeply effected by a novel before.

Author was so good, I'm buying the whole series. Spectacular
Never have I come across a better author. Bodie Theone (tay-nee) is truly amazing. These books are full of drama. It's like the characters became my friends. When I finished the series, It felt as though I lost some good friends. I really don't know if I could be as entertained, enlightened and fulfilled by reading anything else after reading this series. Originally I was checking the series out one at a time from the library. But when I realized I'd finally found something I couldn't put down, I figured I better buy the whole series. I have never bought books before, because I've never found anything worthy of being read more than once. I was just so compelled and I want to share her writings with all my friends and family. She's spectacular. So is anything written by her husband Brock, who helps her co-write everything. It's almost like watching a movie, because there are so many plots intertwined. I was shocked to read the epilogue in RETURN TO ZION. You'll have to find out for yourself. Just don't start reading in the middle of the series. If I could never read another authors works but one it would be the Theone's. - Megan Villa

It's so very beautiful book!!

Medieval People
Published in Audio Cassette by Blackstone Audiobooks (May, 2001)
Authors: Eileen Power and Roe Kendall
Average review score:

A view of History from the Medieval Kitchens
Eileen Power's Medieval People sets out to study the Middle Ages not from the viewpoint of an Historical abstraction, but rather from that of the people who lived during the age. It is an account of six individuals who lived during the MA's; Bodo, a Frankish Peasant; Marco Polo, the famous Venetian merchant; Madame Eglentyne, prioress of Chaucer; an anonymous middle-class Parisian housewife; and two English merchants, one engaged in the wool trade and the other a clothier in Essex. The author has illustrated various aspects of social life of the era by drawing on such sources as account books, diaries, letters, records, and wills. She starts the work with a previously unpublished essay entitled "The Precursors," which describes the barbarian conquest of Rome. In this, she describes the lives of three men, Ausonius, Sidonius and Fortunatus and uses them to foreshadow the life that would re-emerge in the Middle Ages.
She starts by imagining a day in the life of the Peasant Bodo, in the time of Charlemagne. From her study of primarily economic documents from the Middle Ages of this time, she not only extrapolates but truly brings to life Bodo and his wife Ermentrude. From there, she goes on to the better documented life of Marco Polo, and also describes how he served as an inspiration for Columbus. Madam Eglentyne is next. Here, Power humorously details the inner workings of a gossipy nunnery and how Eglentyne would have gone about her life as an aristocratic women of God. She next details the life of a middle class Parisian housewife by studying the contents of the Menagier's Wife and validating many of it's points by citing other documents. She concludes by detailing the lives of the two Thomases; Betson and Paycocke of Coggeshall. Both are merchants and provide a chance for Power to really show off her grasp of medieval economics as well as an ability to compile disparate correspondences into a story of a life. This is a rare scholarly work that truly entertains while being read. One of the best books I've ever read.

History at its best, up close and personal.
Wonderful scholarship in a most readable written style. Goes beyond institutions to discover real people of the "middle" ages.

The real taste of real life
Eileen Power studies the Middle Ages, not from an abstract historical point of view but from simple and real people and what we can know about them. I particularly like her study of Marco Polo, from his notes and diaries, which gives us a materialistic and realistic vision of what they saw of the world, and not what we want to see of what they saw. I also loved Madame Eglentyne, a prioress taken from Chaucer but at once identified to one particular prioress through real life archives and descriptions. A very interesting and useful book to enable us to capture the density of everyday life in the Middle Ages.

Sarah Morton's Day: A Day in the Life of a Pilgrim Girl
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (October, 1993)
Authors: Kate Waters and Russ Kendall
Average review score:

Great!!
I am a Kindergarten teacher and this is a great book to read to them. It has excellent pictures. The words can be difficult for Kindergarteners to understand, however, with a little preparation, they will grasp the concept of the book. This book shows the daily lives of a Pilgrim girl. Samuel Eaton's Day compliments this book.

I share it with every teacher
We originally bought this book at Plimoth Village. My children love it. Having photos of people in actual period dress makes it so much easier to understand that they were real people and they lived differently from us. I share our copy of the book with my children's teachers every fall and they all love it and beg for our copy. Tonight, I'm buying them their own!

A child in early American life
This book is a photo-journal portrayal of the life of a girl in early America. Based on a real-life child, the recreation (interpretation) in historic setting makes the reader feel as if he or she is right there, living the life.

It provides a great day-in-the-life picture. I borrowed this book from the library because it is part of the "core curriculum" recommended by E.D. Hirsch.

My 6 year old daughter now has a very concrete basis for comparing her own life to what it might have been at another time. It's inspiring and fun. And a great teaching tool (as mentioned in the previous review.)

Advanced Project Portfolio Management and the PMO: Multiplying ROI at Warp Speed
Published in Hardcover by J. Ross Publishing, Inc. (April, 2003)
Authors: Gerald I. Kendall and Steve C. Rollins
Average review score:

The New Bible for the PMO!
This book takes the novice in project management through the stages of development of a project management organization in a logical, easily understood manor. It should be considered a required resource for any professional managers library. Obviously, highly recommended reading that both summarizes previous books but opens new areas of exploration. How to "advertise" the PMO for its continued existence, how to identify and track the value add (or lack of) that a PMO contributes to the corporate goals, etc. GET THIS BOOK!

For those who don't get it and need to
If you are struggling with selling the value of portfolio project management, establishing a project management office or implementing project management at the tactical level in your organization get this book in the hands of your decision-makers. Too often strategic plans remain plans. This book provides the direction to execute those plans into desired outcomes. Change is now the norm and this book provides the steps to develop project management competencies to ensure the right change is executed in the right way. If you do nothing else give this book to your leadership team to educate and make them aware of the value of project management.

How to sell then set up a PMO that works
This book really helped me to sell the concept of a PMO, made easier by the chapter with the executive proposal set out as to what senior execs can expect and how the PMO and its projects are linked to the strategy of the organization.
The absolute clarity on what the PMO should do, the road map and the roles & responsibilities of participants was 'eye' opening to say the least, saved me so much time.
Who ever thought of the PMO getting involved in Marketing, to provide the balance between supply side and market side projects ? The indentification / development of the Unique Selling Proposition and the Compelling Marketing Offer as projects that the PMO would permanently carry out, whow !!!
Last but not least a list of questions at the end of each chapter to ensure I learnt the subject, great idea. Thanks guys.

The Hidden Feelings of Motherhood: Coping with Stress, Depression, and Burnout
Published in Paperback by New Harbinger Pubns (09 August, 2001)
Authors: Kathleen A. Kendall-Tackett PhD., Phyllis Klaus M.F.T. C.S.W., Marshall H., M.D. Klaus, and Ph.D., Kathleen A. Kendall-Tackett
Average review score:

Excellent book for both women and men
Dr. Kendall-Tackett's book provides an excellent articulation of the
various difficulties faced by mothers. The book succinctly explains
current academic knowledge and makes it relevant to the lived
experiences of mothers in today's families. Written in a truly caring
tone, the book does an outstanding job of placing the reader at ease
about challenges they may face as mothers and offers a wide array of
highly effective solutions. Written primarily for mothers, this book
also provides men with useful insights into the difficulties faced by
their mothers, wives, sisters and friends, and so can help them to both
sympathize and effect changes to help the mothers in their lives.

an important subject; would be helpful for ALL mothers
The role of the mother in modern day time is honored throughout this book and it is written in a positive tone with the utmost respect for women and mothers. The author acknowledges both stay at home mothers and employed mothers without entering the "Mommy Wars" or even getting into a discussion of what she thinks is best (because she recognizes that what is best for each person is different and unique to that individual). The role of mother is have is not always an easy one. The difficulties, pressures, and stressors of the modern mother are outlined including some historical information about the role of the mother and technological changes regarding housework over the last couple of hundred years. The author contends that each of us is in control of our lives and how we choose to react to these stressors is up to us. By becoming aware of the various things that can make our lives miserable, we can pick and choose which things we want to do or not do or how we react to things, so that life is manageable for us and we can lead happy lives. The author explains that if stress builds up burnout and depression can occur.

This book is not negative in tone. It provides good information to orient the mother as to why there is good reason for feeling overwhelmed with all that she has to do. I have not read any book on this subject that has this focus, this unique attitude of holding motherhood as an important role and providing ideas for how mother can remain sane and happy in her role. This is not like some books that basically have the tone that as a stay at home mother we should feel privileged and not have anything to complain about. The author also does not blame the mother for lifestyle choices she makes and then saying it is her fault. This book applies to all mothers, not just mothers of babies. The author is not judgmental about parenting choices and as an example, portrays breastfeeding in a positive light and mentions cosleeping as fine if that is what works best for your family.

Here is a listing of what is covered in the order of the chapters: stress, what it is; depression, recognizing it, how to get treatment, treatment options; burnout, what it is, recognizing it, how to avoid it. History of the housewife in America, how we arrived where we're at, are our jobs easier now that we have modern appliances? Working outside the home, why mothers might want to combine work and motherhood, making it manageable, making the decision to work. How to lightening housework to a manageable level, sharing duties with spouse and children, organizing the household so it runs smoothly. Sleep deprivation, what it is and how it affects our bodies and mental state. Adult survivors of childhood abuse: physical, verbal, sexual and how it affects the parent, including how it may affect breastfeeding and general mothering issues. The added stress of living with a "spirited" child (such as ADD/ADHD), the special stress of living with a child with medical problems. Dealing with miscarriage, stillbirth, or death of infant, the effects these have on the mother (even if society doesn't fully recognize this type of mourning or stress). The Epilogue gives hope for the future and tips for making things best for you as an individual.

Each chapter has an extensive listing of books and some websites on the various subjects covered in that chapter. The book appears well researched with a long reference research list. Overall it is very easy to read and interesting. It has helped me not feel as guilty for feeling overwhelmed at times. I think every mother would gain something from reading this. It is nice to see that someone realizes how hard the job of mothering is and understands that the role can cause stress, burnout and even depression in even the most capable and intelligent woman.

A must have for all women who have children in thier lives.
While reading this book many thoughts went through my mind. But the one thought that would not leave me is that I wish this book had been around when I was raising my children. Now that I have finished reading it both my daughter and my daughter-in-law will be receiving a copy from me. I am a grandmother who has been there and done that (or at least most of it) and found this book to be helpful in explaining why I may have done some of the things that I did or felt when my children were still at home. Ms.Kendall-Tackett has covered every aspect of motherhood in her book. Reading this book was easy and very informative. I love that she has also included many resources and web sites for the reader . As a woman, wife, mother and grandmother, I highly recommend this wonderful book.

The Day I Became an Autodidact: And the Advice, Adventures, and Acrimonies That Befell Me Thereafter
Published in Paperback by Delacorte Press (February, 1989)
Author: Kendall Hailey
Average review score:

A must read for every intelligent & artistic teen.
Kendall Hailey graduates early from high school so that she can begin "real life" sooner. Real life for her is reading the classics (in chronological order), writing (a play, a mystery, a novel, this journal), and living with her somewhat crazy but loving and supportive family. I enjoyed this book very much as someone who also considers herself an autodidact. This and Grace Llewellyn's Teenage Liberation Handbook should be given to every person on his or her fifteenth birthday.

Amazing insight
I was hooked on this book from the first page. I heard Kendall interviewed by Carol Hemingway (radio) and was captivated by this young woman's insight, humor, intelligence ... and personality. She was blessed with an exceptional childhood, given her incredible parents .. but nevertheless, is such an individual .. and has enormous courage. I had the privledge of meeting her, and she is more delightful than I could have ever imagined .. she's also a good actress (saw her in one of her mother's plays). Wish she would write more books.

I so want to meet this woman!
I just finished this book ... warm, witty, dry, just all round super. I'm enormously curious about Kendall; has she written anything else, what's she up to now?

I've Got You, Babe
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Avon (05 November, 2002)
Author: Karen Kendall
Average review score:

A witty, sensitive read
Okay, I admit it, I'm hooked on Karen Kendall books. I know when I pick up one of her stories I'm going to find entertaining characters, intriguing plots, and outrageous turns of phrase that keep me smiling long after I've turned the last page. In 'I've Got You Babe,' strait-laced art history professor Vanessa Tower finds herself manipulated into teaching the grandson of a famous artist about his grandfather's work. The grandson,"Crash" Dunmoor, has spent much of his life, climbing, kayaking, and parachuting out of planes--anything to avoid the legacy of his grandfather. There's lots of witty fun in this story of two very different people forced to work together. But there's also a great deal of depth and intelligence in the characters, their issues, and the increasing attraction between them. Terrific!

Fun and Sexy
Prim and proper professor Vanessa learns to take walk on the wild side with "Crash" Dunmoor and finds true love. This is a book for everyone who loves to laugh and cry and fall in love. Ms.Kendall delivers a great read with humor and heart. Buy it today!

Another winner from author Karen Kendall
Karen Kendall shines yet again in I'VE GOT YOU BABE. This author knows how to make you laugh out loud while at the same time say awwww over the really sweet and poignant ways her very disparate characters discover themselves and each other.

"Crash" is a hunk to die for, and Vanessa the kind of woman we all wish we could be. Definitely two people (and a book) you don't want to miss.

I'm eagerly anticipating Ms. Kendall's next book.

American Daughter: Discovering My Mother
Published in Hardcover by Random House (02 May, 2000)
Author: Elizabeth Kendall
Average review score:

Moving, tender tribute and social chronicle
This is the most poignant and introspective memoir this reader can recall having read. Kendall tells her personal and family story, intermingled with social and political history of the American 1950's and '60's, from the time she was born in 1947, until April 3, 1969, when, on the way to a spring vacation on the Gulf coast of Alabama, her mother was the only fatality in a car accident in which Kendall herself was the driver (She and her three brothers and a sister were all injured, but survived.). Kendall's mother, Betty, began her adult life as a young society matron, married at age nineteen to a charming but temperamental and bullying ex-Marine pilot and Harvard graduate (She herself had attended Vassar, but left college to marry, and never finished her degree.). She had six children, but despite the burden she bore at home managing her large family, she evolved into a civic leader and civil rights activist. In the meantime, she and her eldest daughter Elizabeth came to rely on each other as confidantes, companions, and friends. This book is a chronicle of white, middle class American life in the mid-twentieth century, as well as a loving tribute to a mother who was taken much too soon, and is for anyone who has lost a loved one.

A compassionate and informed memoir found the story of Eliz
This story of a mother and a daughter strikes a balance between the personal and the historical in an interesting and informative way . Kendall's honesty , humor and intelligence make a personal story a universal one. I was moved by her descriptions of the intense mother-daughter bond and all of it's ramifications. I would recomend this book highly to anyone interested in women's roles in the last half of the twentieth century.

honest and absorbing
I found this book tremendously interesting and absorbing. It says important, perceptive things about all American mothers and daughters, while describing one specific mother/daughter relationship that was both heroic and tragic. An admirably honest, fascinating book.

Cool Book.
Kendall's Book is an enlightened journey through the soul of someone trying to understand the mystery of the will of God. It pays homage to the wonderous works of the creator and the fruits of its creation, while at the same time giving a critical eye to the world's imperfections, with valuable onsight on how to improve thins. All in all, an excellent book.
